Fun and Safe Sledding in NYC Winter

Entertaining the kids during winter break or during a ‘snow day’ doesn’t have to be a challenge. Rather than have your child sit mindlessly in front of the TV this winter weekend, get him out in the fresh air where he can have fun sledding in New York City! Sledding is a favorite winter sport for kids of all ages. Parents need to be concerned about safety while planning on where to take the kids.

The great thing about living in NYC, is there are many sledding hills in the area. Sledding in Manhattan winter weather is a great way for kids to get fit and healthy. Most kids love sledding, so you’ll have no trouble coaxing them out.

Inwood Hill Park

Head uptown with the kids to Inwood Hill Park in Manhattan. The scenery there is so pretty, especially during the winter. Lots of birds and wildlife surround the park all year round. An advantage to sledding here is that you won’t find it too congested with other sledders.

Morningside Park

Take your snowboard or sled and get on down to Manhattan’s Morningside Park. Cliffs and inclines make this an excellent choice for avid sledders. The park is located in Morningside Heights and nearby Harlem. There are dog friendly areas in the park as well. St. Nicholas Park is another nearby spot located on 135th Street that is a good sledding choice.

Brooklyn Heights

If you don’t mind venturing a bit out of the way, consider Brooklyn Heights as well. The Brooklyn Heights Promenade is another nearby area you might consider when contemplating a sledding adventure. The hill is very steep and perfect for the sport.

Sunset Park

Sunset Park on 43rd street has a few hills that are perfect for casual sledding. Prospect Park on 9th Street is another good choice. You’ll find that Fort Greene Park on Myrtle Avenue is where the older crowd choose to sled.

Make it down to 91st Street near Hippo playground. After the kids have their fun on the swings and slide, they can have give that new sled a workout on the steep hill. Alternatively, you’ll find a quiet and less frequented spot on 103rd Street. Pilgrim Hill in Central park is a popular sledding spot, too. This spot is best geared for older kids, as it does tend to be steep.

Which brings us to the point of safety. Parents need to inspect a child’s sled carefully before he is allowed to take it out on the hills. Look for loose or broken parts. Be sure the sled is stable and sturdy. Don’t allow standing on sleds. Have the kids sled on open areas with no large trees. Don’t allow your child to stretch out head first on the sled, as this can be dangerous. Finally, avoid sledding in areas where ice has formed.
